An MBS boy, Tai Weinan did the school and country proud by securing a full government scholarship to study Chemical Engineering in Imperial College, London, the sixth best university in the world (2008 QS ranking). Coming with string of As (10A1, 2A2, 1B3) at the SPM level in 2006, he proceeded to obtain straight As in the Edexcel A-Levels with a near perfect score in many papers. It came as no surprise he was successful in securing a place in Imperial. With a place in the top ten university in the world, he deservedly won a full scholarship from the government to study there. Mighty Minds of MBSSKL

Posted on Jul 28th 2009 at 7:22am under Announcements by wongck

MBS boys have once again shown their creativity and prowess in the field of Science and Mathematics when they emerged first runner-up in the lower secondary category and champion in the upper secondary category in the RHB-The Star Mighty Minds Federal Territory state challenge which was held on 25 and 26 July at Berjaya Times Square.

The state wide competition has received overwhelming participation. In the lower secondary category, 108 teams from schools in Kuala Lumpur took part in this competition. 30 teams were selected after a round of Science, Mathematics and general knowledge quiz. Both of MBSSKL lower secondary teams made it to the second round. MBSSKL team B, represented by Gordan Tay Shao Kang, Kelvin Wong Yow Yung and Mohd Solleh Bin Asmadi, emerged as the first runner-up after the hands-on challenge. The prizes were RM2000 and a digital camera.

In the upper secondary category, MBSSKL team A represented by Eric Khong Mun Kit, Caleb Wong Qile and Anthony Yew Wing Xiang have made the school proud by emerging as the state champion. They will represent Kuala Lumpur in the National Challenge on 15 and 16 August. They took home RM3000 and a desk top computer for the school.

All these are possible because of the vision and dedication of the teachers in the Science and Mathematics department who always strive to bring creativity and critical thinking skills in the teaching of the subject matters. In addition the Science and Mathematics Department has been conducting similar activity since 2006. Go Forward MBS!

Awesome Robotic Boys

Posted on Jul 27th 2009 at 10:11pm under Announcements by wongck

Just fresh from being the best robotic team in Bangsar, our boys showed their skills and talent in winning the KL title, which will enable them to represent the state in the national finals in Perlis in August. The team comprising Chong Cheng Fang (2E),  Chong Cheng You (2H), Tan Jun Yi (2O) captured the Robot Planting Event for the Lower Secondary Section, giving them a shot at the national title in August. If true to the form and should they win the national title, they will represent Malaysia at the World Robotic Olympiad in South Korea in November. Congratulations to the team and let’s hope they will give their best in the national event.

In the KL title, the second team comprising Julian Low Tian-Cong (2H), Bryan Lim Lip Jin (2M),  and Wong Jin Hui (1T) also did MBSSKL proud by capturing the third place in the same event.

The Robotic Club of MBSSKL is only in its second year of inception. Yet, it is able to achieve tremendous success with true grit and perseverance in the spirit of MBS.

18 July 2009: A Day To Remember

Posted on Jul 26th 2009 at 9:12pm under Events by wongck

18th of July 2009 was a special day for Methodist Boys’ Secondary School Kuala Lumpur. A historical landmark, the Yong Chee Seng Block was officiated in the bright, picturesque suburb of Kuala Lumpur. It was indeed a memorable day for everyone in the school, from the helpful and diligent students, to the lofty and caring teachers. Many guests comprising the ‘old boys’ of the school itself were gradually flooding in the entrance, queuing up to register their names at the front counters. When the Guests of Honour, Mr Yong Chee Seng, Bishop Hwa Yung and of course, all present officials and VIP’s comprising of more than one hundred of them, arrived, the event was started.

The 1st KL Boys Brigade Company started their band to mark the official beginning of the ceremony. The guests then moved in to the courtyard to start the opening ceremony. The emcee gave everyone a brief introduction and the national anthem was sung. Reverend Andrew Tan began the order of the service with a short greeting. Then scriptures were read by our school principal, Mr Wong Chee Kheon, followed by Pn. Victoria and Reverend Andrew Tan. It was then followed by a sharing by Bishop Hwa Yung.

Moving on, Mr Yong Chee Seng, clad in a fit, smart coat, went up to the podium and delivered his speech. He got everyone wondering of the main reason that the building was named after him. The answer is simple: because he is the only person with the distinction of being a ‘triple-ex’ of the school – an ex-student, ex-teacher and ex-principal. His contributions are immeasurable. His speech can be concluded in a phrase: “Education develops the mind, body and soul.”

The donors-cum-Guests of Honour were invited for the unveiling of the dedication plaque and ribbon cutting session. Colourful balloons and banner flew high when Mr Yong Chee Seng cut the main ribbon. Stainless steel plaques were given to the VIP’s as the emcee announced the recipients: Bishop Hwa Yung, Mr Yong Chee Seng, Dato’ Vincent Lee, Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan, Dato’ Lee Tak Lum (representing the Centenary Building Committee), Dr. Ho Shu Nam (representing the PTA), Mr Johnson Chong (representing the MBSOBA 2007/2008), Mr Kuan Yew Team, Mr Chiong Chee Kin (representing the consultants), Mr Phang Wai Hoong (representing Fifth Formers 1978), Dr Evelyn Ho (representing Fifth Formers 1979 / Sixth Formers 1981), Mr Wan Heng Yuen (representing the 10th KL Air Scout Group) and Ms Kok Wai Leng (representing the family of Mr. Kok Ah Too). The VIPs had a walkabout at the Yong Chee Seng Block, pondering at the physical manifestation of their gratitude to the school. The momentous event ended with a benediction and singing of the school song. After that, the school was reverberating with the MBSSKL favourite chorus: ‘Play up! Play up! Play up!’.

Go forward, MBS.
