MBS Boy Wins Japanese Scholarship
With a slim chance of less than 0.06% for any candidates to receive the JENESYS (Japan – East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) scholarship, fourth former MBSian, Michael Fork Chun Shin, is one of the 3 selected candidates in the KL region. More than a thousand students age ranged 15-16 applied for the scholarship throughout the nation. After 3 screening processes, which included submission of forms, interviews and a selection camp being held, 56 extraordinary candidates who fulfilled the criteria and the standards of the AFS Malaysia survived the stiff competition. Students were selected based on oral and group interviews, school results, co-curriculum achievements and of course, merit.
Announced by the former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japan has embarked on a 5-year extensive youth exchange programme by providing 35 billion yen (approximately 0.3 billion Ringgit Malaysia) in financial assistance and annually invite approximately 6, 000 youngsters from member countries of the EAS and other Asian nations.
A scholarship worth more than RM 20, 000, Michael is expected to stay in Japan fully under the expense of the Japanese Ministry of Education to explore the following aspects of Japan: politics, diplomacy, economics, society, and culture. He will have an opportunity to travel various cities of Japan besides schooling and being taken care by a host family.
As the best student in the form for 3 years consecutively in MBS, Michael is also active in his co-curricular activities. Being the President of the English Language Debating Club and the Badminton Club of MBSSKL, he is the champion of the recent 9th IIUM Interschool Debating Championship and the 1st British Parliamentary Inter High School Debate Challenge. His efforts in research and leadership are being recognised by the University of Malaya by clinching the bronze medal for the school in the UM EXPO two years consecutively. A librarian and also editorial board member, his IT skills is being recognised in MBS with all first prize awards in IT group projects such as website design competitions and project based learning. Recently, he is also the finalist of the public speaking competition held by the Rotary Club of Pudu.
